Shakespeare In Love… and Out (2020) Auditions
November 3 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
Z-PAC Theatre is holding auditions for a rocking and rolling version of Shakespeare in Love …and Out! The production, will be directed by experienced director Marjolijn Dudgeon who has previously directed Hamlet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream as well as many others plays for Z-PAC Theatre. Shakespeare in Love…and Out! will be a delicious celebration of love and its many fickle moods featuring some of Shakespeare’s most famous lovers and will be staged to coincide with Valentine’s Day in February 2020.
Set in the 1950s to capture the rock and roll era of Grease fame with big skirts and blue jeans and attitude, this is Shakespeare, as you have never seen it with love, sex and rock and roll! Cast requires 7 to 8 males and 7 to 8 females with 6 sets of lovers whose ages range from late teens/ early twenties (Romeo and Juliet) to middle aged (Antony and Cleopatra). As an ensemble production there will be some doubling up of roles for actors with smaller roles.
As the production will rely on an ensemble approach, actors who have a major part as a lover in another scene will take many of the smaller character roles. Puck is the narrator and may at times jump in to take on a small character role.
The excerpts from A Midsummer Night’s Dream will rely on this approach to fill the roles of the fairies.
The production style is set in a retro 1950s look with big skirts or Marilyn Monroe style dresses for the women with men in James Dean, Danny Zuko etc style outfits. We want to totally rock the “Grease” vibe!!
The set will generally be a bare stage with the characters in costume and strategic lighting giving power to the raw theatre of the Shakespearean text. A rise on one side of the stage may provide a level.
There will be whole cast dances as well as a dance for most of the lovers as per indicated in the script: rock and roll, dirty dancing and maybe some tango depending on ability and time to rehearse and pull this off.
Read the script to get an idea of which characters you are interested in auditioning for. Audition scripts consisting of excerpts pertaining to those characters are linked below. You do not need to have learnt it off by heart but be familiar with it, but if you wish to learn it do so.
